Written in the tradition of the classical Chinese detective story, Magistrate Mai and the Invisible Murderer is a delightful concoction. It has been deftly plotted with special attention to character and atmosphere by Everett F. Bleiler, the bibliographer of fantastic literature. Perhaps the best key to the tone of the novel is to be found in its last sentence: "Both men abandoned propriety for the moment and laughed together, uproariously."
