Readers of pulp literature are familiar with the fast-moving prose of H. Bedford-Jones, Canada's contribution to pulp writing. Readers of All-Story Weekly in 1917 and The Thrill Book two years later took a liking to Bedford-Jones's villain, Mr. Shen of Shensi.
As literary scholar Richard Bleiler notes in his introduction to the present volume, these two novelettes bear the same title but they do not share the same plot. Students of pulp writing will find parallels here between Mr. Shen, merciless master of hypnosis and Taoist magic, and Sax Rohmer's diabolical Dr. Fu Manchu.
